111 YEARS OF THE ASHES - AUSTRALIA v ENGLAND.  H/C (Published by: Weldon Publishing)  1st Edition, 1993. 96pp. A history of the Test matches over the years aiming to beat each other and to receive that little urn containing the burnt ashes of a cricket bail. Good condition.  4.50

A HISTORY OF AUSTRALIAN BATTING 1850 - 1986.  H/C + D/W   (Brian Crowley) 1986. 211pp. This book traces the origins of cricket from its first mentions in the colonies of New South Wales and Victoria. We meet the "fathers" of cricket, Victoria's T S Wills and the Englishmen William Caffyn, and altruistic cricket missionary Charles Lawrence who led a talented team of Aborigines to England 10 years before the first official Australian side toured in 1878. Australian batsmanship can be divided into seven major eras: the early pioneer years before 1900 when W L Murdoch was challenging the immortal W G Grace himself; the Age of Trumper" from 1899 to 1914; the first decade or so after the First World War when huge totals became the order of the day; the Bradman Era between the wars; a short post Second World War period when Bradman's "disciples" were at their peak; the era that came under the progressive influence of Richie Benaud's captaincy and later times of Ian & Greg Chappell. THE REAL BENNY HILL. H/C + D/W   (Margaret Forwood) 1st Edition 1992.  212pp.  Benny Hill was one of the most famous comedians in the world. This English star was the most self-sufficient man imaginable. He never married, lived alone, fended for himself. Just a man so single-minded about his work, he scarcely knew anything else existed. The writer was one of the few that managed to get across his doorstep - they hit it off so much that Benny first publicly admitted the existence of the two wheel-bound women he described as his closest friends. In 1989, whilst the world was proclaiming his genius, Thames Television dropped him without warning. This broke his heart and spent the next three years trying to re-establish his career. He suffered from over eating and boredom which eventually claimed his life and died alone in his rented flat. An excellent and emotional account of the real Benny.  A "must read" book. Ex lib. THE YORKSHIRE COAST. S/C - Oblong (Edited by: David B. Lewis) 1991. 240pp. The scenic beauty of the Yorkshire Coast has been produced and moulded over countless ages by glaciers, rivers, the sea, and other geological agencies. Cliff falls at Flamborough and imminent demise of Spurn Head attest to the continuing activity of some of these processes. Man has populated and fought over it since the retreat of the last ice age and has used its natural resources to sustain himself. Since the industrial revolution and the advent of leisure and cheap transportation, both the local population and visitors from further afield have used the coast for recreation, including the arts, and the study of the other animals and plants with which he cohabits. Many of the facets concerning Man's relationship with the Yorkshire Coast, outlined above, are described in this volume which contains 18 chapters each being written by a specialist in his own field. This book has over 200 coloured plated and is supplemented by black & white photographs and line drawings. Excellent condition.  20.00

During her life she was dragged through the mire of a sex scandal and with other tragic incidents, tempered a character that naturally had much steel about it. Her work opened a new era of nuclear physics, and made possible a new therapy for cancer. She was the only person to receive two Nobel Prizes for science.
